Festival Accessories

This set of wings was made for a dear friend of mine when we were both attending the wonderful event The Labyrinth in Los Angeles. We designed her wings around her dress and the blue adonis butterfly. We used a tuft of hydrangea flowers and silver gilded leaves for the center. The back has a frame to slide comfortably into a corset or tight shirt so the wings can be enjoyed strap free.

This ensemble was made for the Labyrinth of Jareth Ball 2014. I wanted to create a very autumnal costume, so I based the wings off the Atlas Moth and stayed with that color scheme for the rest of the costume. I used hydrangeas and fall leaves for the center of the wings that complimented the red peony and fall leaves art nouveau inspired head dress.

These were the first of the moth series of wings. Luna moths were always my favorite insect growing up at a child. There was a mystery about them, they were associated with the moon, but they were this vibrant shade of yellow green. Why would something that lived in the dark be so colorful? Moths became an important symbol for me later and became a returning motif in my Midnight Menagerie paintings.
